CPPVE Opposes AB 1084

The Honorable Susan Bonilla
California State Assembly
State Capitol, Room 4140
Sacramento, California 95814

Dear Assemblywoman Susan Bonilla:

On behalf of the tens of thousands of California families attending a public virtual or blended learning charter school, we respectfully oppose your Assembly Bill 1084. California Parents for Public Virtual Education is a volunteer organization made up of parents with students in public virtual and blended learning charter schools who advocate on behalf of access to online education, quality curriculum, and stable funding.

While traditional schools may be a great environment for most, some children simply need another option. For those who do, parents should have access to a quality, public virtual or blended learning education for their children.

California Parents for Public Virtual Education believes Assembly Bill 1084 undermines a parent’s right to choose what education option is best suited for his/her child.  Recent attacks by the San Jose Mercury News and Sacramento special interests are playing politics with our students.  Parents are demanding that the assault on parent choice must stop.

Assembly Bill 1084 puts individual online charter schools at risk of closure and has the potential of displacing tens of thousands of students in California.  If online charter schools are forced to close based upon Assembly Bill 1084’s criteria, where will these students go to school and how will individual school districts address their unique learning needs?

We hope you’ll keep our concerns under consideration and stop the assault on parent choice in California.

Sincerely,

Dr. Nicole Conragan
President
California Parents for Public Virtual Education
